Description
The “Whitfield” Handcrafted Cremation Urn, from a Collection of Bespoke Wooden Urns from Ireland.
Each Urn is Individually made using wood from trees that are naturally fallen or felled for safety reasons. It is all about taking something that was once alive and beautiful, and turning it back, on the wood turning lathe, into something functional and beautiful – a perfect metamorphosis. The Whitfield Urn is tubular shaped and made of Elm. Including the lid, it stands at 20cms high. The diameter is 8cms and the capacity is 0.3 litre or 18.3 cubic inches.
In this collection we have different size urns made of Ash, Elm with some Walnut, Oak and 3 – 5000-year-old Irish Bog Oak. The Elm and Ash wood has been sustainably sourced. Elm is difficult to obtain due to Dutch Elm disease and the Ash is suffering nationwide, due to Ash Dieback disease, which make these exclusive, eloquent, urns a little more unique.
Irish Bog Oak
Thousands of years ago, forests of Oak, Yew and Pine grew where boglands are today. The remains of these forests are found up to six metres deep. The trees are preserved in the peat through lack of oxygen, which prevents the process of decay. The wood is coloured by the tannins present in the bog. It is coloured brown through to black. The Bog Oak which Larry turns into finials is older than the pyramids of Egypt or the ancient site of Newgrange in Ireland.
When working with wood Larry’s philosophy is that nature is the artist and he is the paintbrush. He chooses the shape of the urn while turning the wood on the lathe, by allowing the beauty of the wood to be at the forefront of each piece.
Each urn is different, as the design of each piece evolves during each stage of its metaphorosis from raw wood to finished urn.
- All the urns are lovingly hand-crafted on a lathe in County Waterford.
- Following sanding, all the urns are polished with beeswax, so no chemicals are used.
- All the urns are eternal when placed indoors and biodegradable when interred.
All urns can be used to store both Flame Cremated Ashes and Alkaline Hydrolysis (Aquamation) Ashes.
Calculating size of Urn needed:
As a rule of thumb, the size of an adult urn should measure 200 cubic inches. This of course can vary depending on the person’s height and frame. We will be happy to advise you on the most suitable size required.
While funeral directors use a rule of thumb of 1 cubic inch per pound of body weight, In reality the urn size is more about the height of your loved one. Following the cremation process no soft tissue remains, just bone. In this collection the larger urn is designed to take the entire amount of your loved one’s ashes.
- The large urn is designed to take some of the ashes, the remaining ashes to be shared among family members.
- The medium sized urns are designed for family members to share the ashes, which helps in the grieving process.
- The small urns are designed for family members who wish to have just a small cache of ashes.
- We also have urns for your pet’s ashes.
